Chapter notes

Start with how your health will be checked

In-person care takes place in a room with the person who treats you. That person might be a doctor or another health worker. Telehealth means care by phone, video, or information you send for someone to read later. Ask what the first visit includes before paying.

As of September 2026, Illinois requires an Illinois licence or other state permission for anyone giving telehealth care to a patient in Illinois.

Illinois requires the same care standards for telehealth as for visits in person. Using a phone or screen does not give a health worker permission to do more than their licence allows.

If you prefer a room

Ask who will check your health and decide on treatment.

Ask whether tests can be arranged and who reviews them.

Ask how you can contact the person who treats you between visits.

If you prefer a screen

Ask whether you will talk at the same time or send answers for someone to read later.

Ask who will read those answers and how you can ask questions.

Tell the service your planned location for the visit.

Ask what happens if you need an exam in person.

Ask for that person’s profession and licence number. Ask whether that licence allows the exams and treatment in your proposed plan. The Illinois licence-check chapter shows where to check the record.

Can a form be the whole visit?

The Federation of State Medical Boards’ advice, checked in September 2026, says treatment cannot be chosen from a fixed online form alone. The person treating you needs enough information to give proper care and must be able to ask more questions.

This advice is not itself an Illinois law. State medical boards can use it when setting care rules. A form followed by questions and answers about your health is different from a form with no further exchange.

Ask the service which Illinois rules apply to your visit.

Under that advice, the doctor must carry out any needed tests, set them up, or refer you to another person who can perform them.

If the screen is not enough, what is the next step?

A clear answer can help you compare convenience with how your health would be checked.

Keep this in mind

Choose the setting after asking how your health checks, tests, and later questions will be handled.
